Minister of Justice

The Ministry exists to create a fairer and safer Cruiswieck. It contributes to the shared justice sector outcomes:

Safer communities, being communities in which there is reduced crime and in which safety and well-being is enhanced through partnerships;

A fairer, more credible and more effective justice system, being a system in which people's interactions are underpinned by the rule of law and justice services are more equitable, credible and accessible.

As the lead Justice sector agency the Ministry works collaboratively with the Department of Corrections and Provincial Police to achieve these two key outcomes for Cruiswieckian communities.

The Ministry’s primary role is to provide advice to the Minister and Associate Ministers of Justice and government. This advice contributes to the strategic direction of government and changes to justice legislation.

The Ministry also provides services on behalf of government, including services and facilities that support judicial decision-making processes and the process of bringing proceedings to courts, tribunals and authorities to be heard and decided.

In fulfilling this role and providing services the Ministry:

  • oversees criminal law and procedures, the Crime Reduction Strategy, youth justice, sentencing regimes and practices, victims, family violence and restorative justice.   Its services include the development and support of specific crime prevention and community safety initiatives.

  • provides services and advice on constitutional issues, access to justice, human rights and Bill of Rights, family law, medico-legal, commercial, property and regulatory law issues and the electoral system.

  • carries out research and supplies statistical information on issues relating to the justice sector.

  • administers the national assembly elections, by-elections and referenda.

  • collects and enforces fines, including court-imposed fines, lodged infringement fines, reparation, court costs and fees. It also enforces civil judgment orders and the service of court documents.

  • manages the administrative services supporting the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and the High Court.

  • delivers management of administrative services supporting the District Court, including the Family Court and the Youth Court.

  • delivers case management, hearings management, judicial support, registry services and other specialist services to other Tribunals and Authorities.
